Sometimes I still wonder how I got here. I assure you it wasn’t planned. It wasn’t a choice.
I am an ACOA. I didn’t realize until I was almost 40 how that probably impacted me and who I am more than anything in my life. I loved someone very much that would become addicted to alcohol. I very much understand the anguish and pain not only for them during their journey but for the ones that love them.
I am always very proud when I am asked to speak from a family perspective, and this beautiful sunny day on September 9, 2017 was no exception. Only this time it was different. You see, my brother and I grew up in Red Deer so it holds a special place in my heart.
Recovery Day Red Deer was part of more than 30 cities participating on various days in September to celebrate and bring attention to Addiction Recovery. Where we all come together; whether you are in recovery, need help, love someone addicted to drugs or alcohol or have lost someone close to your heart. A day to celebrate, encourage, offer hope and help eliminate the shame and stigma.
I know all about shame and stigma. In society. In the hospital. In the media. Even sometimes in our own families.
That is what I hope to change.
